On May 6, 2024, Joseph Muscat, the former Maltese Prime Minister, is facing criminal charges related to the privatization of three state-run hospitals, alongside his former chief of staff, Keith Schembri, and former Cabinet minister, Konrad Mizzi.

These allegations stem from an extensive investigation into suspected corruption linked to the sale of the hospitals to the Vitals Global Healthcare group in 2016. Muscat purportedly received EUR 60,000 from a Swiss company associated with Steward Health Care, which assumed control of the hospitals’ contract in 2018 from the Vitals Global Healthcare group.

Muscat resigned as prime minister in January 2020.
