Previously, in December 2022, he had received a 16-year prison sentence for illicit association and tax fraud. He was accused of overseeing millions of dollars in illegal commissions from contractors between 2012 and 2015, a scheme known as ‘La Línea,’ which ultimately led to the downfall of his government.

Pérez admitted to the charges during the hearing, resulting in reduced sentences. He was given two years for fraud, two years and six months for passive bribery, and three years and six months for money laundering. Additionally, he was fined over US$1 million.
