On May 15, 2023, a Peruvian judge issued a ruling ordering a fresh investigation into allegations of money laundering involving former President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. This decision comes after prosecutors, on May 13, 2023, requested a 35-year prison sentence for the former president, citing his alleged involvement in corruption related to the extensive Odebrecht scandal.
During his tenure as Peru’s Finance Minister from 2001 to 2006 under President Alejandro Toledo, Kuczynski is accused of displaying favoritism towards the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in the process of awarding multiple public works contracts. It is alleged that he received over $12 million in bribes as a result.
