On April 27, 2023, the High Court of Romania sentenced former Finance Minister Darius Valcov to six years in prison for influence peddling and money laundering.
Valcov had requested 20 percent of the value of a contract from a businessman who sought his influence to help a company win public tenders. He later laundered the money.
In 2018, Valcov had already been sentenced to eight years in prison for engaging in influence peddling and money laundering in a separate case.
Both cases revolve around corruption in the awarding of public works contracts while Valcov served as the mayor of the southern Romanian town of Slatina from 2009 to 2013, as stated by anti-corruption prosecutors.
